Keg QR stickers

How a scan finds a keg, which QR stickers work, and how to get yours into PintDeck.

Every keg wears a QR sticker with its own code. Scan it with PintDeck Business for iPhone and PintDeck opens that keg. Any QR code works, as long as no two kegs share one.

How a scan finds a keg

The text inside the QR is the keg's ID number. A sticker that holds 0042 finds the keg with ID number 42, because leading zeros don't count. A sticker that holds a web link, or a string of letters and numbers, works the same way: its whole text is the ID number.

So what the code says doesn't matter. Two things do:

  • Every keg's code is different. Two kegs with the same code can't be told apart, and an ID number can only be on one keg in your brewery.
  • The code is on the keg. If a sticker peels off, give the keg a new one and add its code under … › Edit details › ID numbers.

Which stickers work

Any QR code works, as long as no two kegs share one. Here's the difference between the three kinds you'll come across:

00410042
Works bestNumbered stickersThe QR holds just the number, and the number is printed under it too. Add a whole roll at once: its first number and how many.

WorksDifferent codes or linksStickers from another keg app or a label printer work, as long as no two match. They go in by scanning each one with the iPhone app.
COPPERLIGHTCOPPERLIGHT
Won’t workThe same code on every stickerStickers that all open your website or menu look the same to a scan, so PintDeck can’t tell the kegs apart.

Check the stickers you have

Or check by hand: open your phone's camera and point it at a sticker. Don't tap the link if one comes up. What does it show?

It showsWill it work?
Just a number, like 0042Yes. Add them all at once by number.
A web link, or letters and numbersYes, if every sticker shows something different. Scan each one in.
The same thing on every stickerNo. Stickers that all show your website can't tell kegs apart.

Not sure? Check two stickers. If they show different things, they'll work.

Add kegs with numbered stickers

When your stickers are numbered in order (0001, 0002, 0003…), add a whole stack without scanning a thing. In the setup guide, Add your kegs opens Add your kegs by sticker number: one row per keg size, with How many and the first number on its stickers. The rest follow in order, and each keg's ID number is its sticker number. Numbers already on a keg are skipped, so running it twice can't make duplicates.

Ranges on the Kegs tab add a #

Add kegs on the Kegs tab, with a range like 1-10, makes kegs named #1 to #10 and uses that name, with the #, as the ID number. A sticker that holds 0001 won't find #1. For numbered stickers, use the setup guide or scan them in. See Add kegs.

Add kegs with other codes

Stickers from another keg app, or ones that hold a link, go in by scanning:

Open New kegs from scan

In PintDeck Business for iPhone, go to Cellar › Kegs › Every keg, then … › New kegs from scan.

Set the defaults

Pick the size, what's in them and where they are. Every keg you scan gets them.

Scan each sticker, then Create

Each code becomes a keg, with the code as its ID number. A sticker that's already a keg is skipped, so scanning one twice is fine.

This also works later, whenever you add kegs. More in Scan kegs on iPhone.

No QR stickers yet

If your kegs have numbers stamped or painted on them, add each keg with that number as its ID number, and type it in place of a scan: on the iPhone, under Or type the number on the scanner. You can also print a QR code for a keg from its page on the web, under … › QR codes.

Or count full kegs of each beer by hand until stickers arrive. See Count by hand.

Getting stickers

Any label printer can make them. Search for sequentially numbered QR code labels, waterproof polyester, or send this list to a printer you already use:

  • A different number on every sticker, in order: 0001, 0002, 0003…, with the number printed under the QR too.
  • The QR holds only the number: no web link. Ask for "the serial number encoded in the QR". Plain numbers are what let you add a whole stack at once.
  • Polyester, with a permanent adhesive: waterproof, and rated for cleaning chemicals, heat and the cold room. Paper stickers won't last a keg washer.
  • About 1.5 to 2 inches: big enough to scan from arm's length.
  • More than you have kegs: for new kegs and the odd sticker that peels off.

When they arrive, scan two with the sticker checker before you stick them on.
