Styles and sub-styles

The built-in style list, adding your own styles, sub-styles, and the spec ranges each style is checked against.

Products › BeersEvery planAlso on iPhone

Every beer has a style, and the style is required. Menus show it, the Beers list filters by it, and its spec ranges are what a beer's numbers are checked against.

The built-in list

The style picker starts with Common: the everyday styles, like IPA, Pale Ale, Lager, Pilsner, Stout, Sour and Hefeweizen. Under it is every style in the BJCP 2021 guidelines, grouped by BJCP category (IPA, Strong American Ale, Czech Lager and so on).

On a beer's page, search the picker by name, by BJCP code (21A finds American IPA) or by category.

Your own styles

There are two ways to add a style that isn't on the list:

  • On a beer's page, Edit the On every menu panel, type the style in Style, and pick Add custom style "…". It's saved with the beer.
  • In Settings › Beer styles, use Add a style to tune…, type the name and pick Add style. That adds it before any beer uses it, and opens its ranges.

Your styles show under Custom in the picker from then on, including in Add a beer.

Typing a name that's already on the list, like Double IPA, picks the built-in style instead of making a second copy. Capitals and accents don't matter.

Sub-styles

Sub-style is free text next to the style, up to 100 characters: West Coast, Hazy, Cold IPA, whatever you call it. The Beers list and the beer's page show it after the style (IPA · West Coast), and search finds it. It's optional.

Style ranges

Settings › Beer styles sets the spec ranges your brewery counts as normal for each style: ABV, IBU, SRM, OG and FG. Every style starts on the published BJCP numbers; edit one to set your own. The list marks each style:

MarkMeans
BJCP 21A (the code)Using the published BJCP ranges.
Your rangesYour brewery set its own. Reset them in the editor to go back to BJCP.
No rangesNothing set yet, so beers of this style plot no band.

Each row says how many of your beers use the style, or unused. Edit (or Set) opens the ranges.

The ranges show on a beer's Batches tab, in Listed vs brewed: what your menus list, against the style's range, the last batch and the average. When a listed number falls outside the range, the range shows in red. Edit ranges there changes the style for every beer that uses it.

Changing the style on many beers

Select them on the Beers list, then Edit Selected › Set Style. See The Beers list.

On the iPhone

The style picker in PintDeck Business for iPhone has the same built-in and custom styles, with search, and Create style to add one.
