Linked dates and templates

Tie one task's date to another's so a plan moves together, drag it on the Gantt, and save a project to reuse.

Some plans are a chain: order the hops a week before brew day, crash three days after dry hopping. Tie the dates together once, and when one moves, the rest follow. A project you run again and again, like a release or a festival, can be saved as a template and laid out on a new date in one go.

Tie a date to another task

In the List view, each Start, Due and Time cell has a chain icon.

Drag from the chain

Press on the chain icon in the task that should follow, and drag. A line follows the pointer. Press Escape to cancel.

Drop on the date it follows

Let go over the other task's Start, Due or Time. The gap between them now is the gap it keeps: PintDeck says, for example, Due now follows Start of "Brew day" +2d.

Two rules: both tasks have to be in the same section, and a time can only follow another time.

A tied date's chain turns orange. Click it to see what it's Linked to, View linked task or Unlink. In Task details, Bindings lists what the task follows and what follows it, and the trash button removes one.

When the date it follows moves

Change the date a task follows and the task moves by the same number of days, and anything following it moves too. PintDeck says how many moved, like 2 dependent tasks shifted. If a move would put a task's due date before its start, the other date moves with it so the task keeps its length.

The Gantt

The Gantt view shows each task as a bar on a timeline. Drag a bar to move it, or drag either end to change its start or due date.

When other tasks follow the one you dragged, PintDeck asks before it moves them. Move all 3 (the number counts the whole chain) moves them together. Move just this one moves only this task: the others stay put, still tied to it, and move with it next time.

Tasks without dates aren't on the timeline; Undated at the right lists them.

Templates

A template is a project's shape: its sections, tasks with their dates, tied dates, assignees and tags.

Save one

Set up a project the way you like it. In the Projects list, open its … menu and choose Save as template…. Give it a Template name, and a description if you like, and click Save template. It's listed under Templates at the bottom of the Projects list.

Use one

Start it

Click the template under Templates, or the arrow beside New project and pick it under From template.

Name the new project

Give it a New project name and a Color.

Pick the date it hangs from

Under Anchor task, pick the task whose date you know, like Event day, and give it its new due date. Every other dated task shifts by the same amount; tasks without dates stay without. Preview shows the dates you'll get.

Create it

Click Create project.

A template needs at least one task with a due date to hang from. If someone on the template has left the team, or a tag was deleted, PintDeck says so and leaves them out.

To lay a template out for one private event, event or brew, with every task linked to it, start from that thing's page instead. See A whole template for one thing.

The trash button beside a template under Templates deletes it. Projects already made from it stay.
