Brew day
Run the hot side step by step on the web, on autopilot or by hand, change it to match what really happened, and finish into a fermenter.
Brew day takes you through the hot side, from heating strike water to pitching, with a clock for each step and a ring for each addition. It runs on the web, the iPhone and an Apple Watch at once, and everyone sees the same day. This page covers the web; the phone and watch are in Brew day on iPhone and Apple Watch.
Start a brew day
- From a planned batch: Start brew day in the batch panel, or Start on autopilot or Start in manual on its Brew day tab. That tab also lists what to get ready (A day or two before, The night before, Brew morning) and the day's steps.
- From a recipe: Start a brew day now in the recipe's ⋯ menu, or Start one now on its Process tab. This brews a new batch. To brew one that's planned, start it from the batch.
If that recipe's brew day is already going, both read Back to its brew day. A batch with no recipe runs the usual all-grain day.
The day opens on hold, Ready when you are, showing the first step. Nothing runs until you click Start brew day: the clock, autopilot and the alarms begin then. A planned batch moves to Brewing now, and if it was planned for another day, its plan and tanks slide to today. If its recipe changed since the last version, PintDeck saves a new version now, and the batch keeps it.
Autopilot or manual
The Autopilot switch at the top decides who moves the day along. Switch any time; the day carries on from where it is.
| Step | On autopilot | In manual |
|---|---|---|
| Timed: a rest, the boil, a hop stand | Ends when its time is up, and the next one starts | Waits for you |
| Until it's there: heating strike water, sparging, chilling | Waits for your Done | Waits for your Done |
| A moment: mashing in, a reading | Rings and waits for Done | Rings and waits for Done |
| A step it's safe to pause before | Waits for you to start it | Waits for you |
Timers and additions ring either way.
Follow the day
The big card shows the step you're on, its clock (counting down, or +3:12 when it's over), and what happens next.
- Start with the step's name (Start heat to boil) starts a step that's waiting for you.
- Done ends it. On a step that runs until it's there, it reads It's there: done.
- −5, −1, +1 and +5 give a running step less or more time.
- Skip skips it.
Due now lists additions and checks whose minute has come, each with Skip and Done. Coming up shows the next few, with their times.
The top bar shows how the day is pacing. Pause stops the clock until you Resume. The speaker button turns the beeps off and on: they sound when a step changes, something comes due, or a timer ends.
Change the day to match what happened
Every step in the list at the bottom has a ⋯ menu: Mark done now, Start it now, Skip or Bring it back, Clear its times, and Set times… to say when it really started and ended. Everything after it moves to match.
- Readings: pick Gravity, Temp, pH, Volume or Note, type it and click Log. They go to the batch.
- Timers: a name and minutes, then Add. When one's up it says Time's up; Dismiss it.
- What happened lists every tap, newest first. The undo arrow next to one takes it back. Right after a tap, Undo also shows for a few seconds.
If nothing happens for 18 hours, the day asks Nothing for 18 hours. Still brewing?
Finish into a fermenter
When the last step is done, the card says Into the fermenter with Finish brew day. You can also finish early from ⋯ › Finish brew day….
Pick the fermenter
The planned one is marked (planned). Pick another and PintDeck checks it's free, as it does for any move. No tank yet finishes without one.
Finish
The batch moves to Fermenting in that tank, and its Cellar tab opens.
The readings fill in the batch's numbers, where it doesn't have them already: the last gravity is its OG, an earlier one its pre-boil gravity, and the last volume what went into the tank. FG comes later, in the cellar.
⋯ › Abandon brew day ends the day without brewing. A planned batch goes back to its planned day; a batch the brew day started is canceled.
While it runs, and after
A Brewing now line sits above the Tank Schedule for every brew day going, with its step, its clock and Open. The batch's Brew day tab shows it too. Once it's finished, the tab shows How it went: when each step started and ended, how long it took against the plan, and the readings.
