Batches

A batch's life from planned to packaged, what each status means, and the batch panel where you read it and move it along.

Inventory › Tank ScheduleBrewhouse and ReserveAlso on iPhone

A batch is one brew of one beer, from the day you plan it to the day it's packaged. Its tanks, its brew day, its cellar tasks and its measured numbers all hang off it. Click a batch anywhere it shows (a bar on the tank schedule, the Batches view, the calendar, a beer's Batches tab, a recipe) and its panel opens.

What each status means

StatusMeans
PlannedOn the schedule, not brewed yet. Underneath: Brews Oct 9, Brews tomorrow or Brews today.
Brew day passedIt was planned for a day that's gone, and nothing was brewed.
Brewing nowIts brew day is running.
FermentingIn the fermenter. Underneath, the stage and the day: Primary · day 6 of 21.
ConditioningCrashed or transferred, or in a crash, conditioning or carbonating stage of its plan.
Ready to packageIts ready day has come, or someone marked it ready. Past the ready day it turns amber: Ready since Oct 12.
PackagedDone. Its tanks are free from the day it was packaged.
DumpedPoured out. Its tanks are free from that day.
CanceledNever brewed.

The batch panel

The header has the beer, the batch number, the recipe and version it brews, the status, and one button for the next step. Under it: Brew day, Ready (or Packaged), Tanks (FV2 → BT1) and Yield in half-barrel kegs.

Overview

  • Did you brew this? shows when a planned brew day has passed. Set Brewed on and click Brewed it, pick a day under Move to… and click Move it, or Cancel it.
  • When the beer runs out, and whether this batch is ready in time.
  • Timeline: the batch's grain to glass, drawn, with each stage, the day it starts and how long it lasts.
  • Tanks: change a tank from its list. Days changes Days in the fermenter and Days in the brite for this batch only; the recipe keeps its own.
  • Recipe: before brew day, pick which recipe it brews (brew day follows its steps). Once brewed, it's locked to the version it brewed, and later edits to the recipe don't change it. Open recipe opens it.
  • Details: Edit the Batch number, Brewer, Size (bbl), Expected kegs (half-barrel) and Notes. Size and kegs feed when to brew next.
  • Open the beer, and any Tasks linked to the brew.

Brew day

Before it's brewed: what to get ready and when, the day's steps with their times, and Start on autopilot or Start in manual. While it runs: the current step, with Open brew day. After: How it went, each step's start, end and length against the plan, and the readings taken.

Cellar

The batch's cellar tasks, then Measured: OG, FG and Volume (gal), with the ABV worked out from OG and FG. Brew day fills in OG and volume; type the FG once it's done dropping. Under that, Fermentation charts the gravity readings.

Move it along by hand

Most batches move on their own: brew day puts them in Fermenting, cellar tasks in Conditioning and Packaged. When something happened outside PintDeck, use the header button or the ⋯ menu.

  • Brewed it records the brew without a brew day. The batch starts fermenting on that day, and its plan and tanks slide to match.
  • Cancel it is only for a batch that hasn't been brewed. A brewed batch is dumped instead, which frees its tanks that day.
  • Delete removes a planned or canceled batch and its tank bookings, as long as it never had a brew day. It can't be undone.

After packaging

Packaging closes the batch and frees its tanks. The beer's stock comes from the kegs you fill, so record those on Kegs: see The Kegs tab. Kegs held for a canning run are in Hold kegs for canning.

Past batches

To log a batch brewed before PintDeck, or without a brew day, use Add a past batch on a recipe's or a beer's Batches tab: a Brew date, a Status, and optionally a Batch #, Brewer and Notes. Measured numbers go in its Cellar tab afterward.

For many at once, use ⋯ › Import brew history… on the Tank Schedule, Recipes or Beers tab, or Import from a spreadsheet on a beer's Batches tab. Each row needs Brewed on and Beer; it can also have Tank, Batch size (bbl), Batch number, OG, FG, ABV, IBU, SRM, Volume (gal), Finished on, Brewer and Notes. Rows come in as Packaged. A row with a tank books that tank from Brewed on to Finished on (two weeks when it's blank), which is how PintDeck learns how long a beer with no house recipe takes. See Bringing in your lists.

On the iPhone

Tap a batch on the Brew schedule, the Cellar card or Today to open its page: its status and stage, Brews or Brewed, Ready, Grain to glass, its Cellar tasks and gravity, In the tanks, The plan with today's stage marked Now, its Recipe, and what was Measured.

The button at the bottom is the next thing to do: the next cellar task (Done · Start the cold crash, or Log gravity), else Start brew day, Open brew day, Conditioning now, Ready to package or Packaged. The ⋯ menu has Cancel this batch for a planned batch and Dumped for a brewed one.
